EDU 10002 Understanding Language and Literacy Words and language are the most important thing a child will ever learn (The Human body episode 3 the first step 1998) Language refers to â€Å"any system of symbols used to communicate† and Literacy refers to reading and writing. Children acquire language and literacy is quite a complex process before a child is able to speak the larynx needs to drop 3cm by the time the child is approximately 1year old. For a child to be able to create just one recognisable sound the child must first coordinate over 30 different muscles. It is believed that children learn language so easily because over evolution children have faced great dangers and the quicker they learnt to understand the warnings the more likely they were to survive. We have evolved language as our defence system. At 2 – 2  ½ years a child is self-aware and they realize they are a separate entity and use language to express themselves with words like: I ,Me ,Mine. At 4 years old children are starting to get along with other children and learning to abide by the rules they understand that breaking the rules can lead to punishment and this leads to a sense of shame. It is also at this time that around 70% of children begin to lie, because they don’t want to be punished. The higher the IQ, the more likely the child is to lie.
